Paul A Keany (PAK) was one of my favorite people in my life, and one of the most popular people in my college days. We were fraternity brothers in Phi Mu Delta, a "jock" house at U Maine in the 1960s. Paul was also one of the best athletes I've known, being on the Omaha World Series baseball team from U Maine, and an all-New England halfback on the only bowl team Maine had, the Tangerine Bowl of 1965. At one time, he and I were the only two men in our fraternity who were not majoring in Phys Ed. Paul was in Civil Engineering, I was in Mechanical. I remember if there was a party off somewhere, and it was a tad dull, when Paul arrived, everything changed, he could light up the place so fast with his energy and smile, seriously! A few years later, in 1970, I was a 1st Lieutenant at Ft. Bliss in El Paso TX, for Vietnamese Language School, just prior to my embarcation to Vietnam. Some friends and I went to the Officer's Club, where someone overheard me saying something about Maine. He looked a little like Paul, and he asked me if I knew Paul Keany. It was his cousin, also an Army lieutenant. Sadly, some time after I returned from Vietnam, I learned from Paul that he didn't make it home. I know Paul took that hard.
Whenever I think of Paul, I picture his wide smile, as I know everyone else does. Hope to see you again some day, Paul... Monty D Vogel
